The CSIR JRF Exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) of India, assesses eligibility for assistant professor positions in Indian universities and colleges, and awards Junior Research Fellowships (JRF). This prestigious exam is held twice a year, in June and December, and is delivered in a Computer Based Test (CBT) format for three hours. The paper will be bilingual i.e. Hindi and English.

The examination consists of a single paper with multiple-choice questions, divided into three distinct parts:

Part A: This section includes 20 questions on General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. Candidates may attempt any 15 questions, each worth two marks, totalling 30 marks out of 200.

Part B: This part features 50 multiple-choice questions covering various topics from the syllabus. Candidates can answer any 35 questions, with each question valued at two marks, contributing 70 marks out of 200.

Part C: Designed to evaluate a candidate's understanding and application of scientific concepts, this section contains 75 analytical questions. Candidates are expected to solve scientific problems by applying their knowledge. They can attempt any 25 questions, each worth four marks, amounting to 100 marks out of 200.

A negative marking of 25% is applicable for each incorrect answer. If more than the required number of questions are answered, only the first 15, 35 and 25 questions in Part A, Part B, and Part C respectively will be considered for evaluation

Successful candidates awarded the JRF receive a stipend of ₹37,000 + HRA for the initial two years, and will be upgraded to SRF upon successful completion of two years as JRF and will receive a stipend of ₹42,000 + HRA from the third year. The candidates will also receive an annual contingent grant of ₹20,000. The fellowship will be governed by CSIR, UGC or Research Scheme, as applicable.
